Digestive problems are a modern widespread disease that affects women in particular. Hasty eating, too many processed foods, too little fiber slow down digestion to the point of constipation. Stress and other emotional problems are often behind irritable stomach or irritable bowel syndrome. It is considered healthy to 🚽 between three times a day and three times a week. 

People usually don't think about digestion until there are problems. Nobody really likes to talk about 💩 , yet the big deal is an important biomarker by which the health of the intestine can be read. When diagnosing intestinal health, the so-called Bristol Stool Shape Scale is used, which distinguishes seven 💩 shapes. 

The scale ranges from hard and lumpy (type 1 + 2) to soft and watery (type 5 - 7). The ideal consistency is a soft coherent sausage (type 3 + 4). Not every unusual 💩 indicates a disease of the digestive tract. But the healthier the Gut, the more often the shape of the excreta should be in the middle of the scale.

Decisive for what comes out at the bottom is what goes in at the top. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and plenty of water ensure regular, well-formed 💩. But why is that actually the case? Fruits and vegetables contain large amounts of dietary fiber. These plant fibers cannot be digested by humans. Instead, they swell in the digestive tract and loosen 💩. 

The second advantage of dietary fiber is that it serves as food for our intestinal bacteria. As a metabolic product, they produce short-chain fatty acids, which in turn improve intestinal health, reduce inflammation in the body and have a positive effect on the immune system and metabolism.

Comfortable sitting toilets have a remarkable history behind them. During excavations in what is now Pakistan, constructions dating back to the 3rd millennium (!) BC were discovered that are quite similar to our toilets today. Even then, toileting could be done comfortably, as if sitting on a chair. 

What is good for the legs is not necessarily healthy for the Gut . The culprit is the so-called puborectalis muscle, which wraps around the last piece of the intestine like a horseshoe and kinks it. The kink in the Gut is important: It prevents 💩 from leaving the body involuntarily. 

The catch here is that if the legs are positioned at right angles when sitting, the puborectalis muscle cannot be fully relaxed. The kink in the Gut remains and 💩 can only be transported out of the body by pressing. And regular pressing leads to hemorrhoids in the worst case.

It would be better for bowel health in the Western world if the sitting toilet had never been invented. Because only in the squatting position can the puborectalis muscle be completely relaxed. And indeed: in rural areas of Asia and Africa, where squat toilets still predominate today, hemorrhoids are not a widespread disease. 

But do not worry, this is not a plea to abandon the comfortable sitting toilet. It is enough to raise the feet 20 - 30 centimeters. As soon as the upper and lower leg describe an acute angle of about 35 degrees, the muscle can be loosened, the kink in the rectum disappears and 💩 can leave the body without further effort as if through a downpipe. 

5. stylish 🚽 with stuul

The 🚽 hack has gotten around: In many bathrooms, you'll find small stools, upturned buckets, waste garbage cans moved closer, and other constructions to put your feet up when 🚽. Very few of these solutions are particularly stylish. Let alone have they earned a design award.
